Can you please give me a simplified explanation for how someone, like myself, gets red hair? My parents both have medium to dark brown hair. So I assumed that they were each a Br carrying the recessive red gene and that's how I got my hair, rr. But, I've been reading articles online that have talked about getting four genes from each parent to determine how much and what type of melanin are present to make the hair color. I also read something about a non-red gene and I didn't understand that at all. I thought there were genes only for black, brown, blonde, and red hair. Also, is it true that two redheads can only have redhead children? I read a newspaper article where both the mother and father had red hair, but only 3 of their 4 children had red hair. How is this possible if both parents carry the rr gene? Thanks for your help! View Answer 2009-11-17
I have a very straightforward question. I am 100% positive I am not adopted. I have a widow's peak hairline. Neither of my parents do. Being a carrier of a dominant trait that neither parent bares, what are the chances that the man I call father is my biological parent? Please be honest, I know my mother cheated on my father in the past, so it is not impossible to conclude that I may have been sired by another man without my father knowing. View Answer 2009-10-13
From what I understand, it takes two "red hair carriers" to produce a child with red hair. My question is this: I have one cousin (out of 25 cousins) with red hair. I do not, but does that mean I am a red hair carrier? View Answer 2009-10-05
I have a question relating to my possible future expression of eyebrow hair. My maternal grandfather around age 40 lost his eyebrow and eyelash hair. His son, my maternal uncle also has gone through this process. My mother is age 50 and has no signs of eyebrow or eyelash loss. My father has thick eyebrows and eyelashes with no loss and my paternal grandmother had the same thick eyebrows and eyelashes well into old age. What are my odds of this form of alopecia? Am I oversimplifying this by believing it is Y linked since both my maternal grandfather and maternal uncle express it but not my mother? View Answer 2009-09-15
Hello there, I was wondering could you help me answer a question thats been bugging me for a while? The incidents of red hair in the population of Ireland i think is around 10 % which is one of the highest in the world... what is not documented however is the incidents of red beard! Like a lot of men in Ireland ive got a red beard and a different colour (fair) on top! My brother is completely red. Another has black hair and red beard (although not as red as mine) and yet another has very similar hair colour to mine. My question essentially is... Why? Thanks in advance. View Answer 2009-09-10
I was born with brown hair and I have a patch in the middle that is reddish/blond. My scalp at the patch is very sun sensitive. I burns easily. What is this called? What causes it? Is it hereditary? I think it is but I do not know of any one in my family that has this condition. My grandson also has brown hair with a patch of blondish hair. That is why I think it is hereditary but where did mine come from? I have tried to find this answer on the internet but I have had no luck unless it is called hypo/hyper pigmentation. Thank you. Hi, I am a Malaysian of Chinese descent. Both parents Chinese. I have been wondering most of my life why my hair has hints of red (brownish-red)? Naturally. Especially when I go under the sun.My mum has brownish hair (not black) and my dad has very black hair. All my life I have been asked if I have dyed my hair and got into trouble at school too for that. Is it natural? Or is there something to worry about? Because I am Chinese, and red is not an Asian trait? I was told the sun actually has effect on your hair? Is it true? View Answer 2009-06-26
I grew up with blonde hair all the way until my senior year in high school. I have heard about blonde hair eventually turning brown; however, my blonde hair has seemed to turn dark with a reddish tint. Also, my facial hair grows in red as well. How is this possible? Will my hair ever go back to blonde or eventually turn brown? Is it possible that my mcr1 gene started producing more phaoemelanin and less eumelanin? Can that even happen? View Answer 2009-06-08
I was born with heterochromia of my hair. I have two different coloured eyebrows and eyelashes. My left are strawberry orange/blonde and my right are very dark brown. My scalp hair is dark orange/brown, although it has sections of orange and different browns. My mother was born with blonde hair, which is now light brown/orange and my father has black hair. Do you know why i have this heterochromia, and does it have a particular name, such as heterochromia of the iris is called heterochromia iridium? View Answer 2009-05-26

My grandma was half black and half Asian-Indian. Her parents gave birth to 16 children, 11 boys and 5 girls. Although there is no white ancestory on that side of the family she and some of her bros and sis had blond hair and blue eyes up as children. Most of my grandma's sis were very light complexioned being what the black community would consider to be "high-yellow". There were only two exceptions. Grandma's older sis was very ebony- skinned and had a the a texture of hair that was similar to Asian Indian people. Her complexion resembled my Indian great grandpa who also had an ebony skin color. My great-grandma was a medium brown skinned black woman. Also, my grandma's bros weren't as light as the girls were. I'd say they were about Beyonce's color. Also their hair texture was wavier. The last child they had, my grandms's baby sis, looks to be completely Indian, the only child to look that way. How do you genetically explain this type of diversity in one family? Hi, I am a natural redhead and all three of my sisters have natural red hair as well as my mother. My father had very light colored hair. What are the chances or odds of all four children being natural redheads? We get asked this quite often as we get alot of attention when we are all together. We have never met another family that has all (four in total) with natural red hair, there is always one or two children with another hair color. We also have four staight generations of red hair. We have been told it usually skips a generation. Thank you. View Answer 2009-04-22

I have been diagnosed with Alopecia Totalis and have hypothyroidism. No other family members have Alopecia, however my mother also had hypothyroidism. What are the probabilities that I will develop another autoimmune disorder. Having spoken to several other individuals who have Alopecia Totalis and have developed other autoimmune disorders, such as fibromyalgia, I am concerned about this issue. I have also had shingles and Lyme disease. The onset of both of these and the alopecia were within 3 months of each other beginning with shingles, then Lyme and finally Alopecia View Answer 2009-03-06
I am 20 and just found out I have monilethrix. Im reading more about it and learned that it partly happens because of a mutation in the proteins produced by the body. I know that proteins are highly important in our bodies and wanted to know, if there is a risk of anything else being affected because of the protein mutation? Most of what I read stated that most people who have monilethrix are generally healthy, with no other conditions resulting from the disorder. I just wanted to make sure. View Answer 2009-01-31

Hi, I have very confusing genetics within my family. I myself am quite hairy, have a deep voice, and possess a beard. My father, however, has just a deep a voice as me, although has little to no hair growth on any of his body areas, except his armpits and mustache. The men on my mother's side are very hairy, yet possess fairly high voices. What do you believe my inheritance is? Thanks View Answer 2008-12-05
I have a 3 year old grandson that is mid-autistic. His birth was 3 weeks early due to total abruption from a 24 year old mother. Upon birth he was bagged for 7 minutes and upon stabilzation was transferred to Cook's Chirldren's hospital for a 6 day stay. His autism was diagnoised in May of 2008. He has double posterior hair whorls, slightly lower set ears and communication problems. One, two and three connected words are understandable, when he puts a lot of words together you have no idea what he is saying. My question is we have been told the hair whorls are a sign of mental retardation. Is this true? Our family history contains terminal cancer, high blood pressure, Legg Perthes, and a maternal aunt and cousin with Marphans and Cerebelum artrophy. He has great hand eye coordination and has improved 100% in social behavior around others. View Answer 2008-11-29

Just a hypothetical question Re: red hair... My husband and I are really hoping for a redheaded baby, but have been reading a lot of contradictory information on the net. Very happy to have stumbled across a potentially accurate source! He is firey redhead, with blue eyes. I am a dark blonde, with green eyes. He doesn't know the genetics of his parents as he was adopted, but obviously somebody somewhere carried a few MC1R mutations! My mother is blonde, my sister platinum blonde, both blue eyed. My father had brown hair and green eyes. We would be just thrilled to have a redheaded baby, obviously only time will tell, but what are our chances really? Very appreciative for any info you may be able to provide! View Answer 2008-08-11

I'm a 13 year old girl and I'm 152 cm tall and i weigh 53 kgs. I think there's something wrong with me because i'm so hairy- i've got hair on my abdomen, my back and neck, my shoulders, my arms, my hands, my legs and a little bit on my feet. This problem is really making me un-confident, i hate showing any part of my body- i don't wear t-shirts because i find it so embarrasing and the thing i hate most of all is that the hair is really dark, i'm embarassed to even talk about it with my parents or doctor. Am i really hairy because i'm overweight or is it in my genes? is there anything tablets or medicines or natural herbs or something that will reduce the amount of hair i've got or is there something that will change its color?? Hi, I have dark brown hair except at the forehead where I have a gold blond (Not white) element. I'm quite sure it's not the Waardenburg syndrome because the blond hair is not a patch, it's shaped like a = 'folding fan' that reaches from my left ear and ends in the exact middle of the forehead. The eyebrow on left side is lighter than the other too, but not blond. I have no skin pigmentation patches or hearing defects. I wounder how common this is, if it's some sort of gene mutation and if it have something to do with my right brain (wich qualities are VERY developed). No other in my family is born with this. One parent is Scandinavian and the other come from a bloodline that is mixed with african, south european and east asian since meny generations back. View Answer 2007-11-18

In the last 2 weeks my hair which was completely healthy has just begun to fall out by the hand fulls when I brushed it.I am a very healthy, otherwise, 56 year old woman who has had the longest (down past my shoulders), thickest, healthiest, shiniest hair you could ever imagine all of my life. This is devastating me! I am a nervous wreck right now. I am going bald for no apparent reasons. I have had all types of blood work performed only to be told my test results were all within normal ranges. No thyroid problems, no family history of baldness nor male patterned baldness. Nothing is showing up in any of the tests. I never lost my hair like this after breast cancer issues and taking oral chem drugs. So why now????? I have seen dermatologists and my family physician who both said I and my scalp were perfectly healthy otherwise. I am not currently on any medications other than vitamins which I just started hoping it would help me. So why????? Why is this happening to me?????? View Answer 2007-09-24

Hello! I am only 22 and have many grey hairs what is really making me depresed. I have read that L`Oreal Paris have identified two genes which are responsible for turnig hair grey and discovered molecule for melanin dihydroxyl-5.6-indole. I have also found their latest patent about premature canities. They have compare DNA from premature grey people and those who never goes grey. Here is the link:http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PG01&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=%2220070065389%22.PGNR.&OS=DN/20070065389&RS=DN/20070065389 It is also said that they have tested shampoo and lotion with DNA fragments, and long term use, of the order of two months, resulted in progressive re-pigmentation of gray hair. What do you think can shampoo rich so deep into the skin (4mm), and if it is true when this could be commercially available and does shampoo or lotion must go true all FDA testings and trials. Hello, i have a question about the excess body hair that i have. around the age of 20 (i'm 25 now) i began to develop hair all over my shoulders, buttocks and back. no one in my family has this much excess body hair, especially not in such not so typical places on the body. my father is abnormally smooth and hairless for a man, and my mother is a typical woman who has little hair on her forearms and leg hair she shaves. my brother has a different father than me but he is only hairy on the legs, otherwise he has almost no body hair. and his father, though not bery hairy, is a tad harrier than my father. yet, my brother is not very hairy while i am. could you please explain some of the possibilities as to why i may have so much excess hair all over my body? and in the uncommon areas of my body like back and shoulders, while everyone else in my family has very normal amount of body hair in the typical areas of the body and none of them have it on their backs and shoulders? what are the chances my children have this problem? Hello,This letter is to clearly describe my situation where I am desperately seeking help. I am a 22 year old male who has had a reoccurring scalp condition for 5 years now. I have a folliculitis or pustules on my scalp and only on my scalp. They started forming when I was on accutane to control my acne. These pustules are extremely painful and can get to the size of an eraser. I have noticed that they form in a symmetric pattern on my head and they stay for a couple of days then crust over and reappear somewhere else.I have seen physicians, dermatologists, allergists, and had to make a trip to the E.R. At the dermatologist, I had biopsies and fungal cultures and everything came back negative. I?ve had 5 types of blood tests and HIV test and they all came back normal. I have been prescribed a number of medications and antibiotics which suppress the condition but it returns as soon as I complete the course. I have gone fragrance free and seen no results. I have seen an allergist where I had skin testing and avoided foods I was allergic to and still saw no improvement. After doing research online, I have compared my symptoms to that of Celiac Disease/Dermatitis Herpetiformis. I have always been fluctuant and had cramps and had a generally itchy throat. I have had many weird symptoms over the years. Sometimes my skin will randomly itch all over for a few minutes and then go away. I have had painful lumps in my armpits and on the roof of my mouth, but were not puss-filled. A couple of times while eating food I got an extreme pain on the roof of my mouth which I thought could be allergy related. I have had tonsillitis 2 times and had an oral yeast infection when I was on antibiotics. I eat well and am in good shape.I have come to the end of the road here and do not know what to do. This has caused me to be severely depressed and I cannot live my life like this. I desperately need some help and advice on what to do or what it could be. View Answer 2006-11-30

I went to the hair stylist and the woman who had her hair done before me had alopecia, especially in the crown area. From what I could see there were no lesions on the scalp. The hairstylist proceeded to blow dry my hair with the same brush used on this lady. Even though I know that this condition has a genetic component, do I run the risk of having hair loss now. Hi, I was born with 2 colors of hair. At birth, I had a white pie-shaped area in my bangs and the rest of my hair was jet black. At about 2 yrs. old, almost all of my hair was blonde - though you could tell where the pie-shaped area was still. Then as I got older, the back is dark brown and the front is blonde (NOT white) in the pie shaped area. The doctor told my parents that I had a "white forelock," but from what I have been reading about this - this doesn't seem to be the case. Everything that I read points to a true white forelock being truly white or grey hair and being dominant. Yet, for my case, we know absolutely nobody in our lineage that ever had hair like mine. Is this a white forlock or not? What causes this, etc? I have 6 children and none of my children have this. View Answer 2006-05-30

She has blond hair and blue eyes, fair skined. she has a circular patch of hair on the back left of her scalp that is dark brown. This is the only place where her hair is different. Even the skin on her scalp is darker in that area. I first noticed this at about 3 mos old, and though it would fade. Since it has not i qm quite interested in any information you may have. I found the follwing but nothing talks about the male taking the pill when trying to conceive. A warning about PROPECIA and pregnancy.Women who are or may potentially be pregnant: - must not use PROPECIA - should not handle crushed or broken tablets of PROPECIA. If a woman who is pregnant with a male baby absorbs the active ingredient in PROPECIA, either by swallowing or through the skin, it may cause abnormalities of a male baby\\?s sex organs. If a woman who is pregnant comes into contact with the active ingredient in PROPECIA, a doctor should be consulted. PROPECIA tablets are coated and will prevent contact with the active ingredient during normal handling, provided that the tablets are not broken or crushed. Have there been any cases where the male is taking propecia while the female becomes pregnant? View Answer 2005-09-14
