An individual is born from an incestuous brother-sister relationship. There are no obvious problems with this individual. Is it a risky thing for this individual to have children? Would that be a situation where preconception genetic counseling is needed? View Answer 2009-09-10
ok so here is my question. My father has 1'2 brothers and sisters in Chile. They share the same father. Now my fathers siblings have children. That would make them 1/2 or 1/4 cousins? Now this is going to sound strange but the Chilean guys are very good looking, haha. How dangerous would it be if a marriage were to take place? what percent chance would there be of any defects? I'm not involved at this time and I have not met them in person yet but will be visiting in the near future. I wouldn't think it would be as dangerous since they aren't full cousins. But it would be great to hear back. I know this sounds very strange. View Answer 2009-06-10

My girlfriend and I are related in two ways. A) We are second cousins. Our grandmothers are sisters i.e My maternal grandmother and her paternal grandmother are siblings. B) Her maternal grandfather is my maternal grandfather's nephew.Which means that my girlfriends mother becomes my 2nd cousin which makes my girlfriend my second cousin once removed. What are the risks related to birth defects in our children? What options do we have available to detect and avoid\\reduce any health problems due to our common ancestory? View Answer 2009-03-02

I have reason to suspect that I am the product of sibling incest. Is there any test that can be done on me to determine if that is the case? I have heard that children of siblings have 25% homozygotes in their genes. Is this true and is there a test for this or any other test that would help confirm or rule out this suspicion. It's really important to me... thank you. View Answer 2009-01-27
When I started dating my boyfriend I knew our families had known each other for a long time. I then learned why.... his father and my grandfather were 1st cousins. I would like to know if there would be concern for birth defects associated with close relation? View Answer 2008-10-10
I have a daughter whos father cheated with his first cousin and they produced a child from this cheat. I have not been able to determine from any other conversation I have had with other people and doctors how this child is classified in my daughter's life. Would my daughter consider this child her half-brother or her cousin (2nd, 3rd, 4th)? What kind of genetic abnormalities or conditions can be brought on to this child by this close family relationship that they have? I am very concerned with what my daughter could be exposed to in the future with regards to any mental or physical problems this child might have. Please let me know the answers to these questions. Thank you. View Answer 2008-10-02
We are parents in the process of adopting, and we were recently matched with a child who was conceived through a second degree relationship. We have been trying to ascertain what the medical risks, including potential risks relating to mental capacity, might be. We would be extremely grateful for any insights you might be able to provide (preferably with citations). I apologize for the lack of personal information, but the matter is clearly very private and so wish to remain as anonymous as possible. View Answer 2008-09-15
I was curious about interracial procreation. I know that in dogs many purebred dogs have genetic disorders because of possible incestuous breeding and many mutts have a better disposition and are better behaved. This makes me wonder whether if this theory applies to humans and if it is advantageous to have a variety of genes to create stronger offspring. In other words the greater the variety the more likely the offspring will have the benefits of both races. Are there any studies or books on this topic? View Answer 2008-07-10

My daughter has a boyfriend that is a distant relative. Common grandparents are 4 generations removed from the boyfriend and 5 generations removed from my daughter. If they decide to get married and have kids, should they go through genetic testing? Are they at a higher risk of genetic abnormalities in their children than the general population? I have a question regarding conception of a child through incest.I am the adoptive mother of a child who was conceived when the biological father raped his biological daughter.I have conflicting views on whether or not we should have further testing done to uncover any underlying health concerns that may arise. He is 15 months old now and is growing fine and hitting all developmental milestones on time. My question is whether or not further testing would be beneficial or should we take his health for what it's worth now and wait and see if something becomes a problem later on.Please do not be put off by the ignorance of this question, but I have to ask - is our son destined to have a lower IQ or mental health issues due to his genetic background not having the necessary diversity?ANY advice or knowledge would be MOST appreciated. I am a 41 year old female who just found out I was adopted because my mother was raped by her father. So my grandfather is my father. My mother and I both have schizoaffective disorder. My mother's sister had schizophrenia. What risks do I have that I have an illness due to consanguinity and could any genetic illnesses hit me later in life? In other words, what do I need to be concerned about? Do I need to see a geneticist? View Answer 2007-10-05
My husband and I have decided to try to get pregnant. My mother-in-law was adopted and recently requested her family history. We just found out that the reason she was given up for adoption is because her mother (My husband's grandmother) was raped by her father (my husband's great-grandfather) resulting in her pregnancy. My mother-in-law has had three children, none of which have had any diagnosed medical conditions. I am concerned due to the fact that my mother-in-law is a product of incest. Should we seek genetic counseling prior to conceiving? View Answer 2007-02-21
