I received a call from an adult whose sibling has been diagnosed with hereditary spastic paraplegia. Adult has some of the symptoms; MD referred to Neurologist who said it was totally orthopedic. MD is sending pt to another Neurologist for second opinion. After reading other entries with questions on the subject and reading the GeneReviews on HSP and seeing the multiple genes that could be affected, my question is: Would an Em-Array on this kind of person show the multiple genes in question? A few years ago my cousin took a DNA test because he wanted to confirm that my family is Semtic in origin. The test came back as 100% Semetic (I'm not really sure what that means). We are mixed (European, North African, Arab and Asian), so does this mean that we are more Arab than anything else? Thank you very much View Answer 2009-11-03
What is the length of a chronological aged person vs biological telomere cell age? Example telomere age graph or values; 12 to 16 is newborn? 10 to 12 is teenager or yong adult? 9 to 6 is 50? 5,75 to 1 is elderly? 0 is chronilogical and biological cell death? Where is the data graph? View Answer 2009-08-19
Can you be tested for various genetic bone disorders from one blood draw? How long does it take to get the results back? We have a genetic center nearby. Our daughter was adopted and is having bone problems. View Answer 2009-07-21
My cousin had hers and her sons DNA taken a couple of years aaog to see who the father of her son was, the man was not a match. Last month she had another man tested, he came back as not a match. She has the paper work from both tests. The DNA on her and her son from 3 years ago and now just last month are different. Does your DNA change? I didn't think that was possible. Is it possible that something was done wrong??? View Answer 2009-06-17
My son have a duplicate runx2 - what does this mean and what are the effects of having the duplicate gene? Thank you in advance View Answer 2009-06-04
My parents have both passed, their blood types were AB- and B-. My brother & I are both O+. It seems this is virtually impossible. We are concerned that we may carry a disorder that could be transferred to our kids. Who are "true" birth parents are is irrelevant, our folks were our parents. We just don't want to pass something onto our children without knowing it. What and where could we be tested for any type of disorder? View Answer 2009-05-11
If I had a baby by a non-related man, But I thought there was a possibility that my baby could belong to my First cousin. And I had a standard genetic Dna test done on my cousin and it said he was the father. could the test be wrong because he is my cousin? I don't know if my baby belongs to my cousin or my friend. could a standard dna test tell me who is the father? I did not tell the dna place that he was my cousin. View Answer 2009-04-24

ARE THERE ANY OTHER RESOURCES THAT I CAN GO TO TO GET HELP TO PAY FOR THESE TESTS? tHE TOTAL COSTS IS $350. I AM CURRENTLY PUTTING IN AN APPEAL TO THE PRE AUTHORIZATION REQUEST TO THE HEALTH INSURANCE THAT WAS DENIED. THANKS View Answer 2008-07-29
Hi. I have a question concerning DNA testing on old hair samples. A member of our family has a booklet with locks of hair dating back to the 1870s. Is it possible or viable to get DNA extracted from these samples or is the technology not there yet. These are cuttings and contain no root material. Thanks. View Answer 2008-07-17
My boyfriend was recently named in a paternity suite. He has stood by the fact the he is not the childs father - but he has taken 2 paternity tests that say other wise. My question is - is there any way that these tests are incorrect? The labs in question have destroyed the samples so we have no way of re testing the originals. we are going to court in August and are looking into any posibility. View Answer 2008-07-11
In a DNA test for paternity - would it affect the results of the test if one person had polycythemia vera? A medic said that leukemia would skew DNA testing and he thought that PV would, too. The DNA testing was done with cheek swabs, alleged father and daughter were tested and the results came back excluding him as the father. Probability of paternity was listed as 0%. Thank you for your assistance. View Answer 2008-01-19

My son was just diagnosed using Chromsomal Microarray Analysis which revealed a LOSS in copy number in the long arm of chromosome 12, detected with 2 clones [RP11-14B2, RP11-555G22], encompassing at least 700 Kb in size and confirmed by FISH analysis. The next most proximal & distal clones are 5Mb and 3.7Mb away respectively. Baylor College of Medicine recommends parental analysis but our genetic counselor can't get any more testing approved on either my son or me. I want to know what could possibly be any future problems due to money. How can I find someone that can help us with these tests when we can't afford them? Please answer my questions ASAP. My son's life is very important and he has too many current health problems already. Thanks. View Answer 2007-09-13

I am currently looking at a case study in my cell and molecular biology course at Widener University. I have found it difficult to obtain information on the specifics of how genetic tests such as SSCP and CSGE are conducted. I understand that they both require blood samples, but I would like to know more information about how the laboratory tests are conducted. Thank you for your assistance. View Answer 2006-11-12

I am wondering if you test for certain physical traits? For example can you perform a test that will determine your eye color or nose shape either the phenotype or genotype. If you do not do these tests are there other labs that do. Additionally, I am wondering if a certain trait I have is a disorder. Please respond. View Answer 2006-04-27
My infant son is being tested for a series on conditions (Rubinstein Taybi, Fanconi's Anemia, Thrombocytopenia Absent Radius, etc.). I am surprised to find that the chromosomal test takes "above 4-6 weeks" -- is this typical? is there a way to 'confirm' Rubinstein-Taybi? or does one only truly 'know' simply by says "its probable" and waiting to see how he develops? I have seen many of the online web sites re: Rubinstein -- is there any more current medical literature on this syndrome? Specifically i'm trying to understand the range of functionality/life span/etc that my son will have should he be confirmed. View Answer 2006-04-09
I was wondering what are the genetic disorders for hispanics? I'm 7months pregnant with our second child and was wondering because he's not around anymore, and our son is fine. And also, can ADHD be passed down from the parent? Reason being is because our 2 1/2yr old son is very hyper and can't pay attention to nothing for very long, and I was wondering if he might of gotten that from his father who has ADHD. My question has to do with any kind of identity test including paternity. I have a friend who did a few paternity tests on the guy she knows is her daughter's father. Well, several of the tests excluded him. When she told me the numbers that resulted in the exclusions I was shocked. Different labs had different numbers for the same markers. For example: TPOX (not actual numbers, but same scenario) was 8,11 8,8 and 8,10 on one test. Then it was 8,11 8,8 and 9,10 on the other test. The lab tested the same markers. One lab had this marker as an exclusion. The other had it as an inclusion. Actually upon looking at the numbers this happened at more than two markers. What is going on? Is this normal???
