I have hereditary high cholestrol. I have also had several paradoxical reactions to anesthetics, tranquilizers, and SSRI's. I am morphine resistant. (Also a familial trait.) I am also an unpredictible metabolizer of most drugs. I am either a rapid metabolizer or a slow metabolizer. Consequently, surgery with compete sedation and pain relief or rapid recovery is not completely predictable. Are the traits for high cholestrol, the ability to metabolize drugs, and morphine resistance genetically linked. Or does the high level of circulating fats, affect drug metabolism? Do circulating lipids influence the rate of uptake of medications? Is the issue of rapid/slow drug metabolism sex linked? Is morphine, novacaine, etc. resistance sex linked? Are these issues linked to the "Reward Deficiency Syndrome" that was postulated several years ago? View Answer 2008-11-24
Five years ago, after receiving morphine for post-operative pain, I learned that I had a genetic predisposition against the effects of morphine. Recently, after another surgery, the morphine acted as a stimulant and kept me alert and awake. In the future, what are my alternatives to morphine treatment? Is morphine resistance common? Are there any articles that you can refer me to that I can learn more about this? View Answer 2005-09-14
I read your answer about morphine resistance. Morphine does not work on me at all. Several doctors and anesthesiologists have told me that this runs only in some Native American families. Is that true? Resistance to novocaine and related drugs, also, run in my family. Can you tell me anything about that? Thank you. View Answer 2005-09-14
